Orangeburg, S.C. – SC State's I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium (The Stanback) will continue to celebrate the Legacy of Mr. James Brown, The Godfather of Soul in an exhibition highlighting his significant impact on the entertainment industry, other artists and social issues. The Influence of James Brown: His Imprint on Music, Dance, Style, and Politics opens with a reception on Friday, October 31 at 6 p.m. The exhibition will include a special look at Mr. Brown's imprint on the music and social and political activism of hip hop, Let The Brothers Rap: James Brown's Influence on Hip Hop, curated in association with the director of Celebrity Cause in Atlanta, Iman Ali, who will be signing her new book, The Political Swagger: James Brown from Civil Rights to Hip Hop. Additional signed books will be, The One: The Life and Music of James Brown by RJ Smith and My Life with James: The Story of a James Brown Dancer by Tascha Houston, former dancer for Brown. The evening will feature entertainment by James Brown's band, the JBs, featuring Cape Master Mr. Danny Ray as Emcee, Band Leader Tyrone Jefferson on trombone, Joe Collier on trumpet, and George ''Spike'' Nealy, the Assistant Band Director of SC State's Marching 101 on percussions. Also performing will be Shirlene King, former opening act for Brown. The SC State Alumni Class of 1964 will be recognized for their support of the Stanback. The items on exhibition were acquired by the Stanback when the Director, staff and students visited the James Brown estate in Beech Island, SC, selecting items for preservation in the Stanback including costumes, original music, unpublished photographs, early cuts of vinyl recordings, awards and trophies, personal notes and letters, fan memorabilia and souvenirs from all over the globe.
